PRESERVING HERITAGE, CELEBRATING CULTURE

Leadership | Gullah Geechee
Georgia Museum

At the Gullah Geechee Georgia Museum, we believe that true leadership is rooted in legacy, guided by purpose, and committed to truth. Our leadership team is composed of cultural stewards, historians, educators, and community advocates who bring passion, experience, and vision to the preservation of the Gullah Geechee heritage in Coastal Georgia.

Honoring Our Ancestors Through Visionary Leadership

Since the museum’s founding on the sacred grounds of the historic Needwood Baptist Church, our leaders have worked tirelessly to transform a grassroots preservation effort into a thriving cultural institution. Inspired by the strength of our ancestors—some of whom arrived as early as 1526—our leadership is devoted to building a future where Gullah Geechee history is recognized, respected, and rightfully centered in the narrative of American history.

Core Values That Guide Our Work

Our leadership operates with the following core principles:
- 🕊️ Truth Before Tradition: We are committed to telling the full, unvarnished story of the Gullah Geechee people.
- 🌿 Cultural Integrity: We work alongside Gullah Geechee communities to ensure our efforts are rooted in authenticity and respect. -
🧭 Intergenerational Responsibility: We build today so that future generations can reclaim and carry forward their heritage.
- 📚 Education as Empowerment: We view historical education as a tool of liberation and social justice.

Our Leadership in Action

Through strategic planning, community partnerships, and educational outreach, the museum’s leadership has:
Secured and protected the Needwood Church and 1907 schoolhouse as living heritage sites
Curated culturally immersive exhibits based on authentic oral histories and heirloom artifacts
Established educational programs for local schools, universities, and historical societies
Hosted cultural festivals and heritage days that unite the community and raise awareness
Built sustainable support through donor relations, volunteer development, and nonprofit stewardship

Leadership That Reflects Our Community

We are proud that our leadership team reflects the very communities we serve. Many of our board members, advisors, and staff are Gullah Geechee descendants or long-time residents of Coastal Georgia with personal ties to Sapelo Island, St. Simons, Brunswick, and the Golden Isles region.

A Message From Our Director

“The story of the Gullah Geechee people is not a footnote in history—it is the foundation of it. We are here to ensure our voices, traditions, and sacred spaces are protected, honored, and passed on. This is more than preservation. It’s a calling.”
