At the Gullah Geechee Georgia Museum, we’re committed to preserving the rich heritage of the Gullah Geechee people and welcoming the public to learn, engage, and support our mission. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive.
The Gullah Geechee Georgia Museum is a cultural heritage site and education center located in Brunswick, Georgia. It is dedicated to the preservation, documentation, and celebration of the Gullah Geechee people—descendants of enslaved Africans who developed a distinct culture in the Sea Islands and coastal regions of the Southeastern United States.
We are located at the historic Needwood Baptist Church:

grounds in Brunswick’s Golden Isles, in Glynn County, Georgia. The church, founded in 1866 by newly emancipated African Americans, and the adjacent 1907 schoolhouse serve as the foundation of our museum.
The Gullah Geechee are descendants of West and Central Africans who were brought to the coastal areas of the Southeastern U.S. as early as 1526. Over generations, they developed a unique culture blending African traditions with local influences, especially in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida.
Our exhibits include:
