Learn about the craftsmanship, skills, and cultural traditions passed down through generations.

Coiled sweetgrass baskets are among the best-known Gullah Geechee crafts. Rooted in West African basket-making, they began as working tools on rice plantations and remain a living art along the coast. The museum’s published materials also highlight quilting and wood carving as crafts that carry family and community stories.
